Shooting on a Gloomy Day with Sarah
October 9, 2008So today I finally had another chance to shoot with friend and model Sarah. We had been planning on doing this for a couple of weeks now and today was the only time that we both had free. I had wanted to play with some hairlighting/backlighting using the sun but unluckily for us the only day we had free was a cloudy overcast day.
One thing non-photographers automatically assume about a cloudy day is that the photos will all look horrible and that we should wait until the bright sun is out. This isn’t the best assumption as a dreary cloudy day can still give us photographers nice soft looking light. Imagine the clouds in the sky as gigantic softbox that helps eliminate all the harsh shadows normally found on a bright day. This is great but the images will look a tad flat and boring. In this case it is best to kick it up a notch using off camera lighting to balance the ambiant and the fill (indepth article about that here).
Finally here are a couple images from this session.
