So the best independent designers of the Queen’s University Vogue ‘08 Fashion Show get their designs and dresses to be showcased in the Canadian Girl magazine. Being one of this year’s Vogue photographers I got the privilege and pleasure to shoot Shannon and RuoYang’s designs with my friend from the yearbook Heather.

First me and Heather attempted to use some wireless strobes but gave up and used some ambient lighting instead. Hopefully some of these will turn out okay in print. Personally I like to work with models one-on-one as it is much easier to pose one person compared to a whole group, also smaller groups allows everyone to get more comfortable working together and the poses just seem to flow easier.

Anyways, here are some of my favourites from the day:

Here are a couple more photos from the Project Red campaign photo shoot. Photos were both lit by one flash attached to a shoot through white umbrella. The theme for the shoot was “red” (the “red” in Project Red) and “hearts” (since they are trying to raise money for heart disease research). Hence why we have the red string, red dresses, and Queen of Hearts playing cards everywhere.

Project RED EXEC Shoot

March 18, 2008

A group of students at my school want to start up a charity fashion show with the colour red as there predominant theme. They’re using red as they hope to raise money for heart disease research. Recently they approached me to take a couple photos of their exec team so I decided to volunteer a couple hours on a Sunday night to help them out.

For this group photo I knew I had too many people to pose normally as the white background these people provided was not wide enough for group large group photos but it was certainly long enough for us to all lie down. I was wondering on how to light this using my one flash and I realized it was really really simple. Just fire the flash off camera and bounce the light on the ceiling!

Another important aspect of photography that I have learned recently is that we not only need to get our technical details such as lighting and camera settings right, but we also must somehow get the subject to show the right emotion at the right time. This is where one’s communication skills come into play and I had a lot of fun getting everyone to do something weird and silly in the photo below:

Walking home from the library I bumped into an old friend. Seeing how I was just randomly taking photos of boring old garbage cans I decided to swing my camera around and take a few pictures of her instead.
