INTRODUCTION:Michelle and Shaun are a cute young couple getting married later this year. For their engagement photos we decided to shoot at the construction site of their new home! Luckily for us there was a gorgeous wooded area nearby for us to take photos as well. Although winter photo sessions do tend to get quite cold, I really love how colours just seem to pop out of the images in contrast to the dull white snow. So for photography during this time of year I highly recommend my couples to dress warmly and wear fun bright colours!

INTRODUCTION:
Rosita contacted me late last year to do a few photos of her and her family to decorate their newly renovated kitchen with. At our meeting together she let me know that she was especially drawn to my photography as it seemed to really capture people’s personalities and emotions! For the kitchen they decided on a several large B&W canvases of their individual headshots of family members. Although they’re just headshots I really wanted to inject some more personality into the photos by having everyone bring a prop that meant something special to them for their photos. The props ranged from family cat, Russian hats, golf clubs, and hobbyists air rifles and each showed a little something about each family member. From the love of traveling to a favourite sport or past time. We definitely tried a lot of fun silly things to make everyone loose and have fun in their photos and I am sure it shows in the final product!

Steven Sow: Loving these Spencer! Really original take on family photos. You should see if you could convince Rosita to share some photos of the finished kitchen with the canvases up.

spencerfu: Definitely Steven! Will try to get another shot of canvas in action.

Steven Sow: Can't wait to see them! And let Dad know he looks like he's ready for the PGA tour!

Andrea + Chuck | engagement

INTRODUCTION:
Here is Andrea and Chuck in a winter engagement session near the University of Toronto campus grounds. I met the two of them through mutual friends from church and am very excited to be attending and photographing their Vancouver wedding later this year! I have several destination weddings (hey it’s a destination wedding for me if I’m stuck in Toronto most of the time) lined up for 2010 and am looking forward to the various sights, locations, and people that I will get to meet along the way. At this time of year it was starting to get chilly from the cold winter weather so I recommend that all my couples dress warmly and comfortably for our outdoor photo sessions together. Photos always turn out better when you’re feeling good about yourself!

Maggie and Kiyo got engaged a while back and we headed off to High Park, one of the largest parks in Toronto, for our photo session together. At the time we had a gorgeous bright sunny day and the leaves had just about finished changing colours for the fall season. Before we took photos the cute couple shared a sushi picnic amongst the leaves. You can tell the two of them really belong together since they’re wearing matching outfits! Looking forward to their wedding later in 2010!

INTRODUCTION:
This set was finished a while back but I felt it’s time to post it now as updates on my blog slow down a bit as I try to finish up with all the editing from the 2009 season. Queenie and Anthony had a October wedding up in Markham just a short drive north of Toronto. After the bride and groom met up in the morning, with the groom bearing many gifts as part of the Vietnamese wedding traditions, we headed off to the popular uptown photography location of Unionville Main St for some fun formals. We were greeted to a nice Saturday afternoon in November and were lucky enough to meet up with an organ grinder musician with “authentic” dancing monkey! Eventually we headed up to a fantastic afternoon ceremony and reception dinner at the Shangri-La Banquet & Convention Centre. Congratulations Queenie and Anthony!

Steven Sow: Nice Set Spencer! I love that one of Queenie putting on the pearls, that one of them under her veil where you tilted and composed the shot to get just that right hint of flare, hot! I love that one of the guest taking a picture of the bride and groom while you're shooting one of him. And the cake cutting, great detail! I love the whole set, but those really stood out to me. I also love the post processing you did on this wedding, it just has that little something, something different that you've done from your other weddings, can't wait to see the rest of your 2009s!

spencerfu: Thanks Steven for always checking out and following my blog! The difference in look could be because of the presence of a videographer? Some videographers need a lot of light for their work and bring a lot of portable lighting gear which presents quite a challenge for us photographers and we have to learn and adapt quickly to them. Usually strong direct light doesn't look that great in photos so as photographers we have to learn to either over power their lights for a split second with our flashes or to work their light into the scene as nice hairlight or backlight. Very tricky stuff actually but rewarding when we get it right! PS: I checked out your work as well at http://www.stevensowphoto.com/ and you're quite an accomplished photographer yourself!

Steven Sow: Thanks Spencer! I hope to be where you are one day, I'm learning and growing as I shoot. And you're right, if you can use a videographer's light as backlight it can be very rewarding! Thanks for looking at my blog!
